If Nationwide Is Already Handling It

In short

If Nationwide is already handling your claim or your hire, you do not need to start anything new. The fastest route to an answer is the company that already holds your file, using the contact details on your own paperwork. This page helps you get your facts straight before you call. Nothing is sent or stored from this page.

Support route · not open yet

We cannot pick this up for you yet.

Our own support route is not open. Until it is, this page is preparation only: it has no form, no telephone number and no email address, it sends nothing anywhere, and it stores nothing on your device. We will not open a route until we can say exactly who would receive what you send and what would happen to it.

§ 01Go to the file, not to a new company

When a claim or a hire is already running, the people who can actually answer you are the ones holding the file: they have the reference, the agreement, the hire dates and the correspondence with the at-fault insurer. Starting again somewhere else does not move your case forward, and a second conversation with a different company can complicate the first.

Use the contact details printed on your own documents — the hire agreement, the claim confirmation, or the most recent letter or email you were sent. Those details are specific to your file. We do not publish a number for anyone, and you should be wary of any site that offers you one it cannot stand behind.

Check who you are dealing with. The company arranging your hire is often not your own insurer. If you are unsure which organisation is which, your own insurer or broker can tell you who they referred you to and what that means for your policy.

§ 02Have these four things ready before you call

Keep this on paper or in your own notes. It is for your use only.

  • Your reference. The claim or agreement number on your paperwork. It is the single fastest way to reach your own file.
  • What has actually happened. The accident date, the date the hire started, and the specific thing that has gone wrong or is unclear — in one or two sentences, with dates.
  • How urgent it is. Whether you are without transport today, whether the vehicle is unsafe, or whether this is a question that can wait. Say the urgent part first.
  • How to reach you. The number or address they already hold for you, and whether it has changed.

If the vehicle is unsafe or you are stranded, that is not a paperwork question: use the emergency or recovery line named in your own policy, and in an emergency contact the emergency services.

§ 03What we can still tell you

We cannot look at your file, and nothing here is advice on your individual case. What we can do is explain the arrangement you are in, so the conversation goes better. Two things are worth knowing while a hire is running.

The charges are still being tested. The at-fault insurer does not automatically pay whatever has accrued. Need, duration, rate and vehicle class can each be challenged, and recovery is never guaranteed. Our page on what credit hire costs sets out what is actually accruing and why.

Credit hire usually sits outside your motor policy. The Financial Ombudsman Service describes credit hire and credit repair as a facility offered by claims or accident management companies as an alternative to claiming on your own insurance, under an agreement that is normally unregulated, with no payment or excess upfront and the charges payable at a future date. That is the arrangement to have in mind. See the catch and how the routes compare.
